Answer

The Library does not provide a service to search for obituaries on your behalf. But you are welcome to come into the Purdy/Kresge Library and perform the search yourself.

If you are looking for local obituaries, the Purdy/Kresge Library has the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press on microfilm. Our microfilm collections and readers are open to the public. Here is a link for our library hours.

The Detroit Free Press is also available in a searchable database from 1831 to 1922. This can be accessed off campus by Wayne State affiliates with your WSU access id/password. Or come into the Purdy/Kresge Library and staff will assist you.

There isn't an index to either the Detroit News or Detroit Free Press. It is up to you to search the microfilm to find the obituary.

The Burton Collection at the Detroit Public Library is another source for obituary information.
