Respondus Lockdown Browser is a downloadable app that can be used through Canvas to prevent students from browsing on their computer while taking an exam on that computer. Respondus Monitor can be used with Lockdown Browser to provide individual exam proctoring using a webcam.

Many instructors require students to use Respondus Lockdown Browser while taking online exams.

Student computers in the UGL and Purdy/Kresge have Respondus Lockdown Browser.

To Use Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor in the UGL during COVID-19 restrictions (Fall 2020).

  1. Students will need to complete the Campus Daily Screener and reserve a computer workstation in the UGL.
  2. The UGL has some webcams available for checkout. Students may also request a webcam from the Dean of Student's Office using this form. Students may also bring their own webcam with USB connector to use with Respondus Monitor in the libraries.
  3. Students should open the Respondus Lockdown Browser application from the computer desktop before opening their Canvas course site and beginning the exam/test/quiz.
  4. Students will need to wear their mask during their exam. Students will be allowed to remove their mask during the Respondus Monitor facial recognition and authentication process prior to the beginning of the exam/test/quiz.

Canvas has a "STUDENTS: Introduction to Canvas" training course that will allow a student to take a practice quiz with the Respondus prior to any tests or quizzes in their for credit classes.

C&IT has a description page about Respondus at the link below.
